About the Port
Lüderitz sits on a rocky peninsula along Namibia's remote southern coast, where the cold Benguela current meets the edge of the Namib Desert. Founded in the late nineteenth century as a German trading and colonial outpost, the town retains a striking collection of Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian-era buildings, their pastel facades an unexpected sight against the surrounding dunes and scrubland. The compact center is easily explored on foot from the harbor, with landmarks including a hilltop church and period architecture reflecting its European origins.
