About the Port
Malacca's UNESCO-listed old town preserves the layered story of a port that once ruled the spice trade routes between India and China. The Dutch Square, with its red-hued colonial buildings and clock tower, sits near the ruins of A Famosa, a fortress built by Portuguese settlers in the 16th century and later held by Dutch and British powers. Narrow lanes lead to Jonker Street, lined with shophouses, temples, and traders' stalls that reflect generations of Peranakan, Chinese, and Malay culture.
Much of the historic core lies within easy walking distance of the pier, making it simple to explore on foot. Visitors wander past clan houses, mosques, and churches that stand within blocks of one another, a testament to the city's long tradition of coexistence. Malacca rewards unhurried exploration, offering a compact but richly layered glimpse into centuries of trade, faith, and cultural exchange along the strait.
