Mystery Island, Vanuatu

A tiny palm-fringed islet off Aneityum offers powder-white sand and easy reef snorkeling in one of the South Pacific's most secluded settings

About the Port

Mystery Island, known locally as Inyeug, is a small uninhabited islet just off the southern coast of Aneityum in Vanuatu's Tafea Province, ringed by a shallow coral reef and framed by casuarina and coconut palms. A grass airstrip dating to the Second World War crosses its center, a quiet reminder of the island's wartime past, while today the surrounding waters draw visitors for their clarity and calm.

Ships anchor offshore and passengers arrive by tender directly onto the beach, where villagers from Aneityum set up stalls selling handwoven baskets, shell jewelry, and island fare. There are no permanent structures beyond the airstrip and a scattering of shade huts, so time here centers on swimming, snorkeling along the reef edge, and simply relaxing on the sand. It remains one of the more unspoiled stops in the South Pacific.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Mystery Island.

Snorkel the Reef Edge

Clear, shallow water rings the islet with coral just steps from the tender landing, making this one of the easiest and best snorkeling stops in the South Pacific. Bring your own gear or rent it dockside.

Browse the Village Stalls

Aneityum islanders set up stands along the beach selling handwoven baskets, shell jewelry, and simple island fare. It's a rare chance for direct, low-key contact with local craftspeople.

Walk the Old Airstrip

The grass runway crossing the islet dates to World War II and offers a short, easy walk with open views of palms and turquoise water on both sides.
