About the Port
Stretching nearly 48 miles across the Isthmus of Panama, the canal links the Pacific and Atlantic through a sequence of locks that raise and lower vessels some 85 feet above sea level. Completed in 1914 after a decade of construction, it remains one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken, shortening ocean voyages that once required rounding the tip of South America. More than a million vessels have made the transit since it opened, and the waterway continues to shape global trade routes to this day.
The daylight crossing offers a rare, close-up view of the locks in operation as chambers fill and empty in a gradual, gravity-fed ballet, framed by dense tropical forest along the banks. Observation decks and viewing points give an unobstructed look at the process, while the surrounding rainforest hints at the rich biodiversity of the region. It is an unhurried, absorbing day best spent outdoors, watching engineering and nature meet at close range.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Panama Canal Transit.
Watch the Gatun Locks in Action
Position along the rail early as the ship rises through twin chambers, water surging in from gravity alone; the mechanics are visible from just yards away.
Scan for Wildlife on Gatun Lake
The crossing's mid-section opens onto a vast man-made lake ringed by rainforest, where howler monkeys, toucans, and crocodiles are sometimes spotted from the deck—binoculars help.
Claim a Spot on the Open Deck
Arrive well before the first lock to secure rail-side viewing, since the best vantage points fill quickly and the full transit runs most of the day.
