Patmos

A small Aegean island where faith and history converge beneath a fortress-like monastery and whitewashed hilltop lanes

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Patmos rises quietly from the Aegean, its skyline dominated by the fortress-like Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has watched over the island for centuries. Below its walls lies the Cave of the Apocalypse, revered as the place where Saint John is believed to have received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation. Together these sites have made the island a place of pilgrimage and quiet reflection for generations.

Above the harbor, the old town of Chora unfolds in a maze of whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets, largely closed to vehicle traffic and best explored on foot. The monastery's treasury holds a collection of icons, manuscripts, and ecclesiastical artifacts of notable historical value. Patmos's port sits within walking distance of Chora's lower approaches, making the island's spiritual landmarks readily accessible for a day's unhurried visit.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Patmos.

Wander Chora's Cobbled Lanes

Beyond the monastery walls, Chora's whitewashed alleys hide shipowners' mansions, tiny chapels, and sudden sea views; a gentle uphill walk or short taxi ride from the harbor gets you there in about 20 minutes.

Visit the Cave of the Apocalypse

Descend into the rock-hewn grotto where Saint John is said to have dictated his visions to a disciple; it's roughly halfway along the path between the port and Chora, an easy stop before or after the monastery.

Relax at Skala's Waterfront

Linger over Greek coffee or grilled fish along the harbor promenade at Skala, the island's low-key port town, before or after tackling the hillside sights.
