About the Port
Pío XI Glacier, also known as Brüggen Glacier, spills from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into Eyre Fjord within Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. Unlike most glaciers worldwide, it has periodically advanced rather than retreated, making it a rare and closely studied feature among Patagonia's ice formations. Its face, laced with deep crevasses and streaked blue-white, rises from the water amid a landscape of steep, forested slopes and scattered icebergs.
Reaching this glacier means threading through Chile's Inner Fjords and the narrow channels of the Chilean Inside Passage, a route defined by dense sub-polar forest, sheer granite peaks, and near-total isolation. There are no piers or settlements here; travelers view the ice wall from the water, often accompanied by the calving thunder of ice breaking free. It stands among the most dramatic and least-visited natural sights in southern South America.
