Pisco

A desert coastline gateway to the wildlife-rich Ballestas Islands and the windswept Paracas Reserve

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Pisco sits along Peru's arid southern coast, a modest port town whose name lends itself to the country's signature grape brandy. Its true draw lies just beyond the city: the nearby Paracas Peninsula, with its dramatic desert cliffs meeting the Pacific, and the Ballestas Islands, often called a poor man's Galápagos for the sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and seabirds that crowd their rocky shores.

Most visits center on boat excursions to the islands, a short ride from the Paracas harbor, followed by time along the protected bay of the Paracas National Reserve. The port also serves as a practical, if distant, staging point for travelers continuing on to the Nazca Lines further south. Landing typically involves a tender or a transfer inland, so plans built around the wildlife-viewing excursions make the best use of time ashore.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Pisco.

Cruise the Ballestas Islands

Board a boat from Paracas harbor for a roughly two-hour loop past arches and rock formations crowded with sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and cormorants. Mornings tend to have calmer seas, so book the earliest available departure.

Explore Paracas National Reserve

Drive along the reserve's desert coastline where red-hued cliffs drop into the Pacific, stopping at overlooks like the Cathedral rock formation. A small visitor center explains the area's marine ecology and desert geology.

Fly Over the Nazca Lines

For those with a full day ashore, a small-plane flight over the ancient desert geoglyphs is an unforgettable add-on, though it requires significant transfer time from Pisco and advance arrangement.
