Ponta Delgada (Azores)

Volcanic craters, hot springs, and a handsome harbor capital make São Miguel a green jewel of the mid-Atlantic

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Ponta Delgada, capital of São Miguel and the largest city in the Azores, sits on a fertile volcanic island once favored by transatlantic traders and explorers. Centuries of maritime wealth left a legacy of baroque churches and stone palaces, still visible along streets paved in black-and-white basalt mosaics near the harbor. The city's three-arched gate, once the ceremonial entrance from the sea, remains a defining landmark of the old town, which lies within easy walking distance of the pier.

Beyond the capital, the island unfolds into crater lakes, steaming thermal springs, and pastures that stretch to dramatic cliffs. Sete Cidades, with its twin lakes cradled inside a volcanic caldera, ranks among the archipelago's most rewarding excursions. Volcanic-sand beaches, tidal pools, and opportunities for golf or horseback riding round out an island where green landscapes meet deep Atlantic blue.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Ponta Delgada .

Soak in Furnas Hot Springs

A drive across the island leads to bubbling thermal pools and steaming fumaroles in the volcanic village of Furnas, where cozido stew is traditionally cooked underground in the hot earth. Allow a half or full day for the round trip.

Hike Sete Cidades Crater

Beyond the classic viewpoint, trails circle the twin blue-and-green lakes tucked inside this dormant volcano, offering closer looks at the caldera floor's farms and villages. Reachable by tour or rental car in under an hour from the pier.

Wander the Old Town Mosaics

Trace the black-and-white basalt cobblestones past baroque church facades and the harborside Portas da Cidade gate, all within easy walking distance of the ship. A relaxed hour or two covers the historic core's main squares and convents.
