Port Elizabeth

A gateway to Addo Elephant National Park and the Garden Route, where sweeping Algoa Bay beaches meet Eastern Cape history

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Port Elizabeth, now also known as Gqeberha, sits on the shores of Algoa Bay in South Africa's Eastern Cape, a region long shaped by trade winds and maritime history. The city's Donkin Reserve, with its pyramid monument and lighthouse, overlooks a compact downtown where Victorian architecture and public art trace the area's colonial and cultural past. Wide, sandy beaches line the bay, giving the city a reputation as a laid-back coastal hub.

Beyond downtown, the surrounding region opens onto some of South Africa's most rewarding landscapes. Addo Elephant National Park, home to elephants, buffalo, and a range of other wildlife, lies within a manageable drive of the port, making it a popular day trip for travelers with time ashore. The Garden Route's forests and coastline extend further west, while the historic core near the waterfront remains easily explored on foot for those preferring to stay close to the pier.
