Puerto Chacabuco

A remote fjord gateway to Chilean Patagonia's glaciers, rainforest, and the storied village of Puerto Aysén

About the Port

Puerto Chacabuco sits along a narrow fjord in Chilean Patagonia, its small port serving as the entry point to the Aysén region's dramatic landscape of forested mountains, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. The settlement itself is modest and industrial, built primarily to serve maritime traffic, so most visitors head inland toward the nearby town of Puerto Aysén or further into the surrounding wilderness for a glimpse of southern Chile's untamed scenery.

The area rewards those drawn to nature over nightlife, with opportunities to see temperate rainforest, salmon-farming inlets, and views toward the Northern Patagonian Ice Field on clear days. Roads lead toward Coyhaique, the regional capital, offering a fuller sense of Patagonian life. Given the port's limited walkable center, arranging transportation in advance is the practical way to reach the region's more memorable sights.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Puerto Chacabuco.

Cruise to Laguna San Rafael

A boat excursion across fjords brings you close to the San Rafael Glacier, one of the few glaciers still calving into the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. Plan for a full day, as the journey each way takes several hours.

Explore Coyhaique's Highlands

The scenic road inland climbs through forested valleys to Coyhaique, the region's capital, where markets and mountain views reveal everyday Patagonian life. Arrange a driver or guided transfer in advance since the drive takes over an hour.

Wander Puerto Aysén's Riverside

This quiet town along the Aysén River offers a walkable alternative to the port itself, with salmon-farming inlets and views of surrounding peaks. It's an easy short trip from the dock for those with limited time ashore.
