Dominican Republic · Cruise Port Guide

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

A Spanish colonial fort, a mountaintop cable car, and the Amber Coast's easy beaches meet in one of the Dominican Republic's oldest ports

About the Port

Set on the Dominican Republic's northern shore, Puerto Plata takes its name, "Silver Port," from the shimmering bay first charted by Spanish explorers. The compact old town, within walking distance of the pier, mixes restored Victorian-style gingerbread houses with the 16th-century Fort San Felipe, one of the oldest Spanish fortifications in the Americas. Known widely as part of the Amber Coast, the city has long been a center for amber and larimar mined nearby, and small museums and workshops still showcase both stones.

A cable car climbs Mount Isabel de Torres, giving sweeping views over the coastline and city below, while beyond downtown the shoreline opens into the resort strip of Playa Dorada and other palm-lined beaches. Together the historic core and the coast give arriving travelers a balance of colonial-era heritage and easy Caribbean scenery within a short distance of one another.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Puerto Plata.

Ride the Cable Car to Mount Isabel de Torres

A gondola climbs to the summit's botanical gardens and a Christ statue overlooking the coast; go early for clearer views and shorter lines, roundtrip takes about an hour with time at the top.

Explore Fort San Felipe

Wander the 16th-century stone fortress guarding the harbor entrance, one of the oldest in the Americas, an easy walk from the pier through the old town.

Relax at Playa Dorada

Palm-lined sand and calm turquoise water make this resort beach an easy add-on after the historic core, with chairs, watersports, and beach bars a short taxi ride away.
