About the Port
Santo Tomas de Castilla sits on Amatique Bay along Guatemala's short Caribbean coastline, a working port framed by dense tropical lowland and the Sierra de las Minas rising inland. The town itself is modest and industrial, but its setting makes it a natural gateway to the country's Caribbean side, including the Rio Dulce with its jungle-lined canyon and the nearby town of Livingston, reachable by boat and known for its Garifuna heritage.
From the port, travelers head further afield to the Mayan ruins of Quirigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site prized for its intricately carved stelae, or venture toward Tikal for those with a full day to spare. The pier is primarily a working cargo facility rather than a walkable waterfront, so most visitors arrange transport for excursions rather than exploring on foot. It remains one of the few points of entry to Guatemala's diverse Caribbean and highland landscapes by sea.
Pavlus Recommendations
How our planners would spend a day in Santo Tomas.
Cruise the Rio Dulce Canyon
Take a boat through the jungle-lined gorge past hot springs and hanging vines, with stops possible at Castillo de San Felipe; arrange transport at the pier since it's roughly an hour's drive to the launch point.
Explore Livingston's Garifuna Culture
Reachable only by boat, this Caribbean town blends Garifuna drumming, cuisine, and language found nowhere else in Guatemala; pair it with a Rio Dulce trip to make the most of the crossing.
Marvel at Quirigua's Carved Stelae
This UNESCO site holds some of the tallest and most detailed Maya stone monuments ever carved, set in a quiet park about an hour from the port—well worth the drive for history-focused travelers.
