VENTURE FROM THE HEART OF THE MIDWEST TO THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST ON THIS EXCITING ADVENTURE FROM CHICAGO, ILLINOIS TO ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO.

Beginning in Chicago, this 6-day excursion takes travelers from the hustle and bustle of the city through the vast landscape of the United States. On the overnight journey to Lamy, New Mexico, the Southwest Chief takes riders through the plains, desert, mountains and even by ranches and pueblos. The trip provides a little-seen look at the country, as well as an insiders look at the towns of Santa Fe and Albuquerque. With two days and two nights in each of the two cities, travelers have ample time for planned activities and individual sightseeing opportunities.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Travel from Chicago to Lamy, NM
To begin the first leg of this 6-day expedition, guests must arrive in Chicago on their own accord. At 3 p.m., the Southwest Chief departs for its overnight voyage to Lamy. Superior sleeping and dining cars keep riders comfortable on the journey, and while Coach accommodations are provided, Roomette and Bedroom upgrades are possible.

Day 2 - Quick Transfer from Lamy to Santa Fe
The Southwest Chief is set to arrive in Lamy at approximately 2:20 p.m. on the second day. Once in town, there is approximately an hour of free time to grab a bite to eat or shop before catching the 3:15 p.m. bus to Santa Fe. At less than an hour in length, the bus ride is quick and painless and still provides ample time for initial sightseeing once in Santa Fe. This is the first of two overnights.

Day 3 - Out and About in Santa Fe
Today you are on your own to explore Santa Fe. We suggest the Loretto Line, a tram tour which provides an in-depth look at some of Santa Fe's most significant sites. Hotel accommodations are provided on the third night, as well.

Day 4 - Transfer to Albuquerque
Departing in either the late morning or early afternoon, depending on the day of the week, the Rail Runner train transfers guests from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. The train station in Albuquerque is located in the heart of the Downtown area, so dining, entertainment, shopping and more are within close proximity upon arrival. For convenience, buses depart directly from the Rail Runner station and transport travelers to Old Town for the first night overnight in Albuquerque.

Day 5 - Tour Albuquerque
Learn more about the art, history and culture of the city on a scheduled tour with the Albuquerque Trolley Company. Historic Route 66, Old Town, Museum Row, the railyards and even some historically significant neighborhoods are included with the tour, which begins at 11 a.m. This is the final planned day and overnight of the trip.

Day 6 - End of Journey
There are no planned activities or tours on the final day, and guests are free to return home or continue their exploration of Albuquerque. The Sandia Mountains are a perfect place to see the natural side of the city, as is Cibola National Forest. Optional Addition - Transfer to Los Angeles: As a post-tour extension, which is not included in the price, travelers have the option to take the Southwest Chief from Albuquerque to Los Angeles. Guests who elect to take advantage of this opportunity travel through the desert and through the mountains of Southern California. One overnight is included in Pershing Square area of Los Angeles.
