ITINERARY

Day 1: Sail from Juneau
Spend the next two days exploring Admiralty Island National Monument, known to the locals as Kootznoowoo, or "fortress of the bears." Admiralty Island has the highest density of brown bear (coastal grizzly bear) in southeast Alaska and the highest density of bald eagle nests in the world. During the early morning and evening hours, kayak along the forested shores to look for bear, deer, bald eagle and other wildlife. Visit Gambier, Admiralty Island's most productive habitat for brown bear, salmon and deer. While anchored, you might choose to fish from 'Safari Spirit's' swim platform or even from the kayaks or skiff, as Gambier Bay has the largest run of pink salmon in southeast Alaska. The next day begins with a search for whale en route to Sail Island. Linger alongside boisterous sea lion hauled up on the island's rocky shores. Continue to Pybus Bay for evening anchorage and a chance to view bear in the creek at sunset. MY 'Safari Spirit'

Days 2-3: Admiralty Island National Monument
Stop this morning at the Brothers Islands and embark on an invigorating rainforest walk. Continue to the largest Steller sea lion rookery in southeast Alaska to observe the sea antics of the juveniles and the "lording" of the reproductive males who sometimes avoid the water entirely between mid-May and August. Throughout the afternoon, keep a sharp eye out for humpback whale in Frederick Sound, their primary feeding ground. With an unstructured agenda, there are more opportunities to catch one of nature's most spectacular sights: humpback whale lunging out of the water in multi-ton unison to feed on masses of herring. As 'Safari Spirit' moves on, take a close look at the lighthouse perched on the banks of Five Fingers Island. Then cross to the mainland to slip into Windham Bay for an opportunity to observe sharks. Set off on another hike or, if you prefer, stay on board ship to relax on deck or in the hot tub. MY 'Safari Spirit'

Day 4: Frederick Sound whale and Steller sea lion
Prepare for three dramatic and unrushed days of boating and kayaking into the Inside Passage's most breathtaking fjords - Endicott and Tracy Arms. Each steep-walled, narrow and ice-choked waterway culminates at the foot of spectacular tidewater glaciers. Dawes Glacier dominates the base of Endicott Arm; the twin Sawyer Glaciers greet you with iceberg thunder at the onset of Tracy Arm. Waterfalls, mountain goat, bear, harbor seal and snowy peaks dot the land and sea. Activities include kayaking and hiking inside Ford's Terror, a short but stunning fjord that shoots off from Endicott Arm. You also have excellent views of the gigantic icebergs (some larger than your yacht) and glaciers from the skiffs and kayaks. Arrive in Juneau on your last evening and spent the night dockside.
