Amalfi

A cliffside medieval republic turned coastal jewel, where a Byzantine-mosaic cathedral crowns the heart of the Amalfi Coast

About the Port

Amalfi sits at the mouth of a steep ravine on Italy's southern coast, its pastel houses stacked against dramatic cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once a formidable maritime republic of the Middle Ages, the town retains that legacy in the Duomo di Amalfi, whose 9th-century origins and Byzantine mosaics still anchor the main piazza and hold the remains of St. Andrew. The wider coastline, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has drawn admirers since antiquity for its dramatic scenery and easygoing Mediterranean rhythm.

Narrow alleys climb from the harbor into the historic center, largely walkable from the waterfront and lined with shops selling ceramics and the region's famous oversized lemons, used locally to produce limoncello. Visitors can wander at a leisurely pace, pausing at the cathedral's cloister or simply taking in views of the cliffs and sea. The compact scale of the town makes it an easy introduction to the wider Amalfi Coast's celebrated beauty.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Amalfi.

Day Trip to Ravello

A scenic bus or taxi ride (about 20 minutes) climbs to this hilltop town, where the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone open onto sweeping coastal panoramas. Book transport ahead, as roads and parking are tight.

Boat Trip Along the Coast

Small boats depart from Amalfi's harbor for hour-long runs past Positano's cliffside houses and hidden coves accessible only from the water. Reserve early, especially for smaller vessels that fill quickly.

Visit the Emerald Grotto

A short drive west of town, this sea cave glows with an eerie green light that filters through underwater openings, illuminating stalactites and a submerged nativity scene. Rowboat tours inside run frequently and take about 20 minutes round trip.
