Gijon

A historic Asturian port city where Roman ruins, cider culture, and a spirited old quarter meet the Bay of Biscay

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Gijón traces its origins to a small fishing settlement dating back some 3,000 years, and layers of that long history remain visible today. The Cimadevilla quarter, the city's old town, climbs a headland above the harbor with narrow streets, colorful facades, and views over the water; nearby, the Roman baths at Campo Valdés offer a glimpse of the city's ancient past. Plaza Mayor anchors the center with its arcaded architecture, a good starting point for exploring on foot.

As the heart of Asturias, Gijón sits at the center of Spain's cider-making tradition, and local taverns pour the beverage alongside hearty regional cuisine built on seafood and mountain produce. A waterfront promenade and miles of bike lanes lined with public sculpture invite a slower pace along the Bay of Biscay. The old quarter lies within easy walking distance of the port, making independent exploration simple for visitors with limited time ashore.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Gijon.

Climb to Cerro de Santa Catalina

Walk up through Cimadevilla to this headland park crowned by Eduardo Chillida's Elogio del Horizonte sculpture, with sweeping views over the bay; about 15 minutes on foot from the port.

Sip Cider at a Sidrería

Watch servers pour Asturian cider from shoulder height in the old quarter's taverns, a ritual meant to aerate the drink, paired with local seafood tapas.

Bike the Coastal Promenade

Rent a bike and pedal the flat waterfront path lined with public art and beach views, an easy way to cover more ground than walking allows in a short call.
