About the Port
Korcula's old town occupies a small peninsula shaped like a herringbone, its narrow lanes branching off a single main street in a medieval plan that has earned the settlement a place on UNESCO's tentative list. Gothic and Renaissance buildings line stone squares, and the compact core, sometimes called Little Dubrovnik, sits within easy walking distance of the pier. The island claims a long association with Marco Polo, and a house said to be his family home draws curious visitors through its old streets.
Beyond the walls, the island unfolds into olive groves and vineyards, including those around Cara and Smokvica that produce a well-regarded dry white wine. The coastline mixes pebble beaches with clear, calm water, and nearby Mljet, tied in legend to Odysseus, offers wooded hills and quiet coves for those extending the day inland.
