Salaverry

A gateway port near Trujillo where the adobe cities of the Chimú and Moche still rise from Peru's northern desert

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Salaverry serves as the port of call for Trujillo, one of Peru's oldest colonial cities and the doorway to a landscape shaped by pre-Columbian civilizations. Nearby, Chan Chan spreads across the desert as the largest adobe citadel in pre-Columbian America, a UNESCO World Heritage Site once ruled by the Chimú. Further inland, the Moche built ceremonial pyramids known for their painted mythological friezes, remnants of a culture that flourished centuries before the Inca.

Beyond the archaeological sites, Trujillo's historic center offers colonial-era plazas, churches, and mansions arranged around a lively main square. The port itself is industrial and functions primarily as a transit point, so most itineraries move quickly toward Trujillo and the surrounding ruins. Travelers with an interest in ancient engineering and mural artistry find this stretch of Peru's northern coast especially rewarding.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Salaverry.

Explore Chan Chan's Adobe Walls

Wander the vast Chimú capital's plazas and carved friezes of birds, waves, and fishing nets, roughly 20-30 minutes from Trujillo by taxi. Allow at least an hour to appreciate the scale of the largest mud-brick city in the Americas.

See the Moche Pyramids' Friezes

Visit Huaca de la Luna to view multicolored murals of the fanged deity Ai Apaec, preserved for over a millennium beneath desert sand. A short drive south of Trujillo, it pairs well with Chan Chan on a half-day inland excursion.

Stroll Trujillo's Colonial Plaza

Circle the Plaza de Armas to admire pastel mansions, wrought-iron balconies, and the cathedral before browsing nearby shops for regional handicrafts. It's an easy, walkable way to sense the city's colonial character before returning to port.
