Trapani

A Sicilian crossroads of salt pans, baroque streets, and a cable-car ride up to medieval Erice

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Trapani sits on a slender peninsula on Sicily's western coast, historically serving as the port for the hilltop town of Erice. Its old town reveals baroque churches and balconied palazzi along narrow streets, a legacy of centuries as a strategic crossroads between trading powers. Beyond the city, salt marshes stretch along the coastline, still worked much as they have been for generations, while the Egadi Islands rise offshore to the west.

The historic center lies within easy walking distance of the port, making it simple to explore on foot before venturing farther afield. A cable car climbs from town to Erice, where medieval streets and wide views over the coast reward the ascent. Nearby, the vineyards of Marsala and the ancient site of Mozia round out a region layered with history, flavor, and dramatic coastal scenery.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Trapani.

Ride the Cable Car to Erice

A cable car climbs roughly 2,500 feet from Trapani to this walled medieval hilltop town in about ten minutes, opening onto cobbled lanes, a Norman castle, and sweeping coastal views. Reserve a return time if visiting independently, since lines can build midday.

Taste Marsala Wine Country

The vineyards around nearby Marsala produce Sicily's famed fortified wine; a short drive from port leads to cellars offering tastings paired with local cheeses and olives. Well worth the detour for wine lovers with a few hours to spare.

Explore the Salt Marshes and Mozia

Windmill-dotted salt pans line the coast south of Trapani, still harvested by hand, with boat trips crossing to the tiny island of Mozia to see Phoenician ruins and mosaics. Best reached by car or organized excursion, as public transport is limited.
