A Week In... Spain

Fairy-tale sights
While Spain imported many architectural styles - you'll see variations of North Africa's Moorish arcades in extravagant palaces, French Gothic and Romanesque arches dressing cathedrals, and columns and ornate detailing synonymous with Italian Renaissance and Baroque design in basilicas and plazas throughout the country. Spanish artists and architects made indelible marks with visions of their own. Antoni Gaudí i Cornet began the Modernism movement in Barcelona, surprising the world with wildly whimsical buildings. The works of Golden Age artist Velázquez and 18th-century painter Goya draw legions of visitors to Madrid's Prado Museum. And whitewashed Andalucían villages and flower-draped balconies in Seville never fail to inspire romance.

Las Ramblas, la Sagrada Família & more in Barcelona
Discover Barcelona on a guided walking tour that takes you along the passageways of Las Ramblas, where cafés, restaurants and shops attract street performers and flower vendors. Continuing on to Barri Gòtic, the city's old Gothic quarter, you'll find narrow streets and squares dating back to the Middle Ages. Here at the city's 13th-century cathedral, sightseeing continues by coach for a drive through seaside Montjuic and past the 1992 Olympic Stadium, before your visit to Gaudí's whimsical Sagrada Família - referred to as "Art Nouveau run wild." The rest of the day is free for you to explore on your own, with much to see and do, from a stroll in Gaudí's flight of fancy in the mosaic-encrusted Parc Güell to sampling small plates of tapas in a cozy bar.

To Granada via Málaga & Ronda
Fly to Málaga for a drive along mountain roads to clifftop Ronda, home to one of the oldest bullrings in Spain; a local guide shares insights about the town's historic architecture and double-layered arched viewing stands of the bullring on a walking tour. Following lunch at Parador de Ronda, continue to Granada, a jewel of the Sierra Nevada foothills in southern Spain. Enjoy dinner with wine at your palace hotel tonight.

Southern Spain, from the Alhambra through Andalucía and on to Seville
Join us for an insider tour of the 14th-century palaces and gardens at the Alhambra this morning. Explore the massive Renaissance palace of Charles V and the lush fountain-filled gardens of the Generalife. After lunch it's on Seville via Andalucía, a melting pot of different cultures sometimes referred to as the bridge between two continents. Journey into Andalucía's rolling hills and view charming villages with whitewashed houses clinging to the hillsides. Continue on to romantic Seville, where your Spain vacation continues this evening with a private performance of flamenco dancing and dinner. Spend the next two nights at the Hotel Alfonso XIII in the heart of Seville, which enjoys a reputation as one of the world's finest hotels.
