About the Port
Set near the mouth of the Stikine River, Wrangell is among the oldest settlements in Alaska, its long history reflected in a notable collection of totem poles found throughout town. Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park preserves rock carvings left by earlier inhabitants, offering a direct link to the region's deep past. The town sits within a broad bay framed by a long valley and coastal mountains, giving arriving visitors a striking first view of the landscape.
North of town, the Stikine River spreads into a wide delta of braided channels, drawing salmon runs and the wildlife that follow them, including eagles, seals, and black bears, often visible from designated observation points.
